Details
The flexibility of rattan – how it can be bent and shaped at will – gives the Grace Chair (1936) its balance of elegance and informality. The frame is entirely crafted by hand from rattan that’s steamed to make it more pliable and then coaxed into shape, before being held in a jig as it cools. The rattan flexes under the weight of the sitter, adding another layer of support as it adapts to the contours of the body. Danish designer Tove Kindt-Larsen was an early pioneer in rattan chairs, and she studied with Kaare Klint before founding a design studio with her husband, Edvard, in 1945. Made in Indonesia.
