Breaking the mold — An experiment that became a modern icon, the Eames Molded Armchair is the embodiment of the Eameses’ quest to use innovative materials to create a molded, single-shell chair. This sculptural, comfortable, durable chair is the result – a timeless, versatile design that’s at home in almost any environment.
Details

Details

Charles and Ray Eames’s experiments in material innovation led them to pioneer the use of molded fiberglass to create an organically shaped, single-shell chair in 1950. This low, comfortable lounge chair offers just the right amount of give, with a deep, slightly angled seat and waterfall front edge to provide soft support. The wire base is nicknamed “cat’s cradle” for its intersecting forms, which provide stability as well as graphic interest. In 2013, Herman Miller safely brought back the fiberglass shell thanks to a new proprietary production process. Today’s fiberglass chair is made of 99% recyclable materials and covered by Herman Miller’s take-back program for environmentally sound recycling. Plus, it’s true to the original with its beloved variegated surface. “The chair that Charles and Ray were designing,” says grandson Eames Demetrios, “is the chair that’s made tomorrow.” This is an authentic Eames Chair by Herman Miller.

Charles and Ray Eames

Charles and Ray Eames

Design is for living. That maxim shaped a widespread shift in design during the 1940s and '50s. It was a revolution of form, an exciting visual language that signaled a new age and a fresh start – and two of its prime movers were Charles and Ray Eames. This husband-and-wife team's unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Sleek and simple. Beautifully functional.
